<--Back Coach Look Schedules for 2010 Fall

Colleyville Baseball Association will be holding player coach looks on Saturday, August 21st at the Colleyville Baseball Complex at 5200 Bransford Road in Colleyville. It's important all recreation players ages 07U and up attend this look.

The Spring 2010 Coaches Look helps our coaches with the selection of players in their team formation. Players that do NOT attend the look will not be eligible for team selection as a part of the draft and will be randomly placed on a team.

Rules & instructions for the coach look:

  • Arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled look time.
  • Check in with the registration desk before proceeding to your assigned field and get your player number.
  • Dress in baseball and wear weather appropriate attire.
  • Bring your gear (bat, helmet, gloves, water, etc.)
  • Warm ups are the responsiblity of each player and should be completed prior to the start of your tryout.
  • Warm ups should be done in the outfield where your age group is assigned for fielding and throwing. Do NOT warm up in the public spaces outside your assigned field.

If parents or older sibblings are interested in volunteering - your assistance is welcome (please bring glove).  Below outlines the schedule times by age group.

Coach Draft/Team Formation Rules and Schedule
Team assignment process can make for a better year for each player individually, for a team and league in general. A baseball league that has teams that are athletically balanced and closer to parity with one another will make for a better season with a rich individual player experience.

Below outlines the dates for this years Coach Draft.

Draft Rules, Methods and Process
Colleyville Baseball has two (2) official recreation seasons each calendar year: Fall and Spirng

Spring teams 07U/8U Pinto and older will be entirely re-drafted in the spring and a modified draft will be used in the fall. The drafting process involves two (2) steps for each age group:

  • Coach Look
  • Player Selection

The Coach Look process gives head coaches the opportunity to evaluate all the spring players for that age group. Youth players are evaluated on several athletic areas, including hitting, base running, and ball handling. Players participating in the coach-look are eligible to be selected in the draft, and those players who are unable to attend the coach look will be distributed to teams using a “blind pick” methodology. It is not a requirement to attend the coach-look for your child to play in the CBA, but it is highly recommended and increases your chances of being selected on your team of choice.

For the SPRING, CBA will use the following process:

Immediately following the coach look (or shortly after), coaches are assembled by age group and a player draft is held. Youth players that attended the look are drafted from the available player pool by the team coaches. The order of the player draft uses the “snake” order to keep selection fair and balanced. (e.g., Team 1, Team 2, Team 3, Team 4, Team 4, Team 3, Team 2, Team 1, Team 1…)

Once the youth players that attended the coach look are placed on a team, players not attending the coach look will be distributed to teams by their registration number, lowest to highest, until all team rosters are filled. The reason the CBA randomly distributes players that do not participate in the coach look is so no unfair advantage is given to a coach who may have specific knowledge about a player that the other coaches weren’t able to see in the coach look.

For FALL team formation, CBA will use the following process:

The fall season, which is primarily instructional and the spring season, which is instructional AND competitive. The fall season is the time when youth players move up a league age category. The fall season is a period where recreational youth players become familiar with the various changes in the rules of the game, as well as getting accustomed to the changes in the playing field dimensions which they will encounter in regular spring season play. The differences in the baseball objectives between the fall and spring seasons reflect how the Colleyville Baseball Association approaches team formation.

For the fall and to the extent it is possible, teams will remain together, but teams are drafted for both the fall and spring seasons.  Please see the exception to this in the note below pertaining to 7U, 8U and 9U age groups.  In the fall, players whose team returns from the spring are not drafted and will remain on the same team (unless requested not to return to the spring team).  If the player is new to the association or was on a spring team that did not return for the fall season --  will be redrafted on newly formed fall teams and teams returning for the fall that need additional players to field a team.  Unfortunately, the CBA will not be able to grant requests from parents who want to change teams to play with a specific coach, who was not their coach in the spring.  Any returning players who desire to play for a different coach will have to participate in the Coaches' Look and will be subject to the fall draft.  However, the League Commissioner may, at their discretion, grant the request if a valid hardship can be demonstrated.

NOTE:  For fall 7U, 8U and 9U team formation, coaches will – by mutual agreement with the players’ parents – protect up to five (5) players.  Different rules are needed for these age groups for fall as the CBA combines 7U and 8U in the spring and forms a premier league and a recreational league.  Allowing premier teams to remain significantly intact would create a competitive imbalance for the fall season when these age groups revert to being a combined, age-pure league due to registration numbers and time constraints.
  • The protected player does not have to come from the previous team(s).
  • The player/parents can go to a different team.
  • If a coach from the team requests you to be protected, you do not have to agree and can elect to be looked/drafted or seek another coach/team.
  • The designated protection has to be an agreement between the player/parents and coach.
  • Coaches kids have to be designated as protected player(s).
  • If you are not contacted to be a protected player, you should attend the player look (try-out) and be drafted.  If player can not attend look they will be assigned by blind draft.
  • A parent/player does not have to agree to any protection and can elect to look/draft.
  • A coach is prohibited from adding a coach as their assistant coach, for the express purpose of protecting a new player and not making the player subject to the Fall draft.
  • Other than 7U, 8U or 9U returning coaches from the spring season may keep their teams to the extent their team members have registered for the fall season and done so prior to the coaches’ look.  The head coach is not required to return under this scenario – only one coach (head coach or one assistant) is required to meet this standard.
  • If a team’s coaching staff does not return for the fall season, the players on that team will be drafted to other teams.
  • A “Coaches’ Look” will be conducted prior to the draft, and all players who attend the coaches’ look will be eligible for the draft.  A player wishing to remain on their spring team (assuming that team has a returning coach) does not have to attend the coaches’ look.  Alternatively, if a player’s team is returning and the player wishes to play for a different team or coach, they are free to enter the Coach Look to be drafted by a different team.
  • Other than 7U, 8U and 9U a coach is prohibited from adding a coach as their assistant coach, for the express purpose of protecting a new player and not making the player subject to the Fall draft.
  • Unfortunately, the CBA will not be able to grant requests from parents who want to change teams to play with a specific coach, who was not their coach in the spring.  Any returning players who desire to play for a different coach will have to participate in the Coaches' Look and will be subject to the fall draft.  However, the League Commissioner, may at their discretion, grant the request if a valid hardship can be demonstrated.
  • Those players who do not attend the coaches’ look (except returning team players wishing to remain with their spring team) will be placed “in the hat,” and will not be eligible for specific, named drafting (this does not mean these players will not be on a team).  The "blind draw" of the names "in the hat" will take place after the last draft eligible player has been drafted. The first pick "in the hat" will come from the team next in line to draft after the last draft eligible player has been chosen and on to the next coach and so on until the last "in the hat" player has been drawn.
Player numbers in the fall usually are lower than in the spring so an adequate number of players must be maintained for each team. Keeping the teams together during the fall affords the opportunity for youth players to focus on the instructional element of the game rather than team bonding. The more competitive spring season is completely re-drafted every year, in order to keep the teams closer to a skill parity with one another.

The draft will be conducted phases:

    • Draft order will be determined by the fewest number of players returning on each team.  The team with the fewest returning players will draft first.
    • The team with the fewest number of returning players will draft players until their number of players equals the next lowest team.  Thereafter, this will continue until all teams have drafted.
    • Example:  From a returning player perspective, Team 1 has zero players, Team 2 has 4 players, Team 3 has 6 players.  Drafting would be as follows:
      • Team 1 – Picks 1-5 (5 players on the team)
      • Team 2 – Sixth Pick (5 players now on the team)
      • Team 1 – Seventh Pick (6 players)
      • Team 2 – Eighth Pick (6 players)
      • Team 1 – Ninth Pick (7 players)
      • Team 2 – Tenth Pick (7 players)
      • Team 3 – Eleventh Pick (7 players)
    • The draft order would continue from this point forward until all players have been drafted.
  • The draft is conducted in “snake” order and will "snake" as soon as there are two teams or more with the same number of players.
  • The "blind draw" of names "in the hat" will only occur after all draft eligible players have been selected.
  • Players who register for the league after the draft will be assigned to teams in the order of their registration and in league draft order.

Other items to consider:

  • Siblings playing on the same team, will be considered by the CBA on a case-by-case basis. No siblings will be allowed to play more than one (1) year up under any circumstance
  • Players requesting to “play up” (one year above their normal age group) will be considered by the CBA on a case-by-case basis and must be approved by the CBA Commissioner prior to completing the registration process.
  • Players may not play in an age group lower than their age group, with only extreme situations considered.

“Protected Players” are the children of volunteer coaches are deemed to not be a part of the draft process. Rules that govern protected players are outlined below:

  1. The commissioner of each age group must be notified prior to the draft by each team’s head coach as to their Protected Players.
  2. Other than 7U, 8U and 9U, for the fall, a coach is prohibited from adding a coach as their assistant coach, for the express purpose of protecting a new player and not making the player subject to the fall draft.

“Select” or “travel” players are allowed to play in the Colleyville Baseball Association Recreation program, but must be included in the draft and may be selected by any team in the age group in which they are playing follow the rules outlined above. CBA expressly prohibits any player playing on a “select” or “travel” team from being protected in the recreational league from a drafting perspective. This rule applies to “select” or “travel” players who desire to “play up” in the recreational league, as well.

**** All coaching candidates (including those who have coached in previous seasons) MUST complete the online CBA Volunteer Application in their family profile, without exception, before the coaches application due date. ****

This requirement extends to any person who desires to be in direct contact with our children during practices or games, regardless of whether their child is a “Protected Player” under the draft rules. Coaches will be selected by the CBA with priority being given to those individuals who have coached in the CBA during previous seasons. Other coaches will be considered and selected by the CBA based upon a number of qualifications, including coaching experience.

To maintain the safety of our children, all selected coaches are subject to background checks conducted through the Texas Department of Safety. The number of coaches selected in each age group will be determined by the number of players in that age group. The optimal roster size for coach-pitch teams is 11-12, and 11 for age groups 9U and above. The total number of registered players in each group divided by the optimal roster size will determine the number of teams in that age group. The CBA may extend the number of teams in a certain age group based upon its experience in post-registration activity.
