Recreation Draft Rules - Spring vs. Fall
Team assignment process can make for a better year for each player individually, for a team and league in general. A baseball league that has teams that are athletically balanced and closer to parity with one another will make for a better season with a rich individual player experience.

Colleyville Baseball has two (2) official recreation seasons each calendar year:

  • Fall
  • Spring

The fall season, which is primarily instructional and the spring season, which is instructional AND competitive. The fall season is the time when youth players move up a league age category. The fall season is a period where recreational youth players become familiar with the various changes in the rules of the game, as well as getting accustom to the changes in the playing field dimensions which they will encounter in regular spring season play. The differences in the baseball objectives between the fall and spring seasons reflect how the Colleyville Baseball Association approaches team formation.

For the fall and to the extent it is possible, teams will remain together. Players may request to be on certain teams, but the CBA makes no guarantee that any player will remain on their spring team during fall play due to the optimization of roster sizes associated with the number of players in the league. Player numbers in the fall usually are lower than in the spring so an adequate number of players must be maintained for each team. Keeping the teams together during the fall, affords the opportunity for youth players to focus on the instructional element of the game rather than team bonding. The more competitive spring season is re-drafted every year, in order to keep the teams closer to a skill parity with one another.

Therefore, spring teams 07U Pinto and older will be re-drafted annually. The drafting process involves two (2) steps for each age group:

  • Coach Look
  • Player Selection

The Coach Look process gives head coaches the opportunity to evaluate all the spring players for that age group. Youth players are evaluated on several athletic areas, including hitting, base running, and ball handling. Players participating in the coach-look are eligible to be selected in the draft, and those players who are unable to attend the coach look will be distributed on a random basis to teams. It is not a requirement to attend the coach-look for your child to play in the CBA, but it is highly recommended and increases your chances of being selected on your team of choice..

Immediately following the coach look (or shortly after), coaches are assembled by age group and a player draft is held. Youth players that attended the look are drafted from the available player pool by the team coaches. The order of the player draft typically uses the “snake” order to keep selection fair and balanced. (e.g., Team 1, Team 2, Team 3, Team 4, Team 4, Team 3, Team 2, Team 1, Team 1…)

Once the youth players that attended the coach look are placed on a team, players not attending the coach look will be distributed to teams by their registration number, lowest to highest, until all team rosters are filled. The reason the CBA randomly distributes players that do not participate in the coach look is so no unfair advantage is given to a coach who may have specific knowledge about a player that the other coaches weren’t able to see in the coach look.

Other items to consider:

  • Siblings playing on the same team, will be considered by the CBA on a case-by-case basis.
  • Players requesting to “play up” (one year above their normal age group) will be considered by the CBA on a case-by-case basis.
  • Players may not play in an age group lower than their age group, with only extreme situations considered.

“Protected Players” are the children of volunteer coaches are deemed to not be a part of the draft process. Rules that govern protected players are outlined below:

  1. 07U and 08U Pinto coach pitch teams may protect the children of three (3) coaches
  2. 09U Mustang and above kid pitch teams may protect the children of two (2) coaches.
  3. The commissioner of each age group must be notified prior to the draft by each team’s head coach as to their Protected Players.

“Select” or “travel” players are allowed to play in the Colleyville Baseball Association Recreation program, but must be included in the draft and may be selected by any team in the age group in which they are playing follow the rules outlined above. CBA expressly prohibits any player playing on a “select” or “travel” team from being protected in the recreational league from a drafting perspective. This rule applies to “select” or “travel” players who desire to “play up” in the recreational league, as well.

**** All coaching candidates (including those who have coached in previous seasons) MUST complete the online CBA Volunteer Application in their family profile, without exception, by 4:00 PM January 12th. ****

This requirement extends to any person who desires to be in direct contact with our children during practices or games, regardless of whether their child is a “Protected Player” under the draft rules. Coaches will be selected by the CBA with priority being given to those individuals who have coached in the CBA during previous seasons. Other coaches will be considered and selected by the CBA based upon a number of qualifications, including coaching experience.

To maintain the safety of our children, all selected coaches are subject to background checks conducted through the Texas Department of Safety. The number of coaches selected in each age group will be determined by the number of players in that age group. The optimal roster size for coach-pitch teams is 11-12, and 11 for age groups 9U and above. The total number of registered players in each group divided by the optimal roster size will determine the number of teams in that age group. The CBA may extend the number of teams in a certain age group based upon its experience in post-registration activity.

What is covered in the registration fee?
Many times we get the question.... "What does my registration fee cover?" In this section, we will outline the items that are included in your $100.00 CBA league fee.

Below is a breakdown of the spring fee compents:

  • Each player receives a jersey and a hat specific to the team that he/she plays on.
  • T-Ball Players receive participation trophies each spring.
  • Trophies are provided to 1st and 2nd Place Finishers for the Regular Season for all other age groups each spring.
  • Trophies are also provided for each 1st and 2nd Place Finishers in the Season Ending Tournaments.
  • The City of Colleyville is paid a park usage fee for each participant in the league each season.
  • The association provides baseballs, catcher's gear, and other field equipment.
  • New equipment is purchased every two years with the used equipment being donated to the underprivileged.
  • Funds are spent for special events such as Opening Day Festivities.
  • The association spends funds to assist in player and coach skill enhancement.
  • Then, there is the general administration of the association that includes postage, office supplies, advertisement, webpage and the list goes on and on.

On the flip side, the Association has fundraising events to keep the monies charged to the participants at a minimum. These include:

  • external tournaments
  • the concession stand
  • hamburger and other food cookouts
  • snow cone vendor
  • and various other external vendors and fundraisers.

Helmet Rule for Spring 2008
For the Spring 2008 season, Colleyville Baseball is going to require players to provide their own helmets. Historically, about 50% of the participants have already had their own because of older siblings, style or color preference, or parental preference.

As many of you know, the costs of helmets can range from $15 to $60+. For the initial implementation of this policy, the CBA is going to supplement the cost of helmets to allow players to purchase their own helmet for the minimal cost of $10. These $10 helmets will be available during registration at Star Sports Shop in Colleyville.
